Religious Autonomy Sometimes, without knowing even what it really means, people use the Hebrew term "Bat Mitzvah." Sometimes, without even knowing that Aramaic was the language that Jesus used, people use the Aramaic phrase "Bar Mitzvah." My job is to explain to you what a bar or bat mitzvah really means. (The answer: it means that you are responsible for your own religious life.) And, then my job is to work with you to construct an appropriate ceremony and celebration to mark this milestone.
